The Broadside | Democrats Can’t Offer Anything To The American Male

I’m late to the game on this one and there are a lot of other newsworthy items that I could focus on (the LA riots, anyone?) but I feel compelled to comment on Democrats being mystified on how to talk to American men.

Democrats have blown millions of dollars on efforts to appeal to “American Men,” who turned to President Donald Trump in droves on election day, in the hopes of winning back the working class, according to a report.

Democrats have spent $20 million on their efforts, with donors and strategists holing up in luxury hotel rooms brainstorming how to convince working-class men to return to the party, according to a New York Times report.

The plan, code-named SAM, or “Speaking with American Men: A Strategic Plan,” promises to use the funds to “study the syntax, language and content that gains attention and virality in these spaces,” according to the report.

Studying “syntax, language and content that gains attention” sounds like marketing research to me, not an effort to understand “American men.” While strategic, marketing tactics are only half the problem.

The other half is the product you’re selling. If your product doesn’t appeal to men, it won’t matter how slick your marketing is.

So, what are Democrats selling?

  • Democrats sell the feminization of masculinity (“toxic masculinity”). Implied: be softer and empathetic; you know, like a woman.
  • Democrats sell women’s infallibility (#BelieveAllWomen). Implied: men are always guilty.
  • Democrats sell imputed racism (“white supremacy”). Implied: contemporary white men are to blame for the historical problems faced by blacks (and other minorities).
  • Democrats sell the fantasy that a man can be a woman (“trans rights”). Implied: you’re a bigot if you disagree that biological sex is a choice.
  • Democrats sell abortion up to the last second (partial birth abortion). Implied: men (and women) can be sexually reckless without consequence.
  • Democrats sell a gender pay gap (men make more than women for the same job). Implied: men treat women unfairly.

Obviously, an incomplete list; but the overarching theme of the six is that Democrats are the party of Scolds.

The Democratic Party still sees men as part of the problem, rather than part of the solution. It is fundamentally defined by its belief in a constitutional (i.e., Creator-granted) right that applies only to women and, in fact, aggressively rebukes men for even thinking that they might, theoretically, have an interest in the effects of their own behavior. Although it may not state its animating spirit quite as brashly, the Democratic party essentially functions according to the Steinem Principle (popularized by its namesake, the feminist icon Gloria Steinem) that “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.”

In other words, women don’t need men.

David Hogg has the solution:

A few weeks ago (again, as detailed in a link above), Democratic National Committee vice chairman (and longtime anti-gun activist) David Hogg told Bill Maher that his party’s problem is that it is governed by nannies, who wish only to scold men for behaving like men. “Young people,” he said, “should be able to focus on what young people should be focused on, which is how to get laid and how to go and have fun.”

Spoken like a true 25-year-old single male with no responsibilities beyond himself.

The deeper problem with the Democrats (and, dare I say, the Republicans, too) is that searching for what appeals to the American male ignores what God says about being a man. Shouldn’t our politicians be taking that into account and encouraging that behavior?

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” —1 Corinthians 16:13 (ESV)

What does it mean to “act like men”? One of the better discussions of this verse is by Greg Morse, a staff writer for Desiring God.

“Act like a man” was a common commission given to the generation about to enter the promised land. I can’t recount how many times my own retreating spirit has needed to drink from Joshua’s chalice. His Lord charged him,

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous [andrizomai]. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

Joshua, and indeed all of Israel, would need to “play the man” to conquer their own fears and enter the land swarming with enemies fierce and fortified (Deuteronomy 31:6). God had already executed the cowardly spirit of the spies by a forty-year march through the wilderness. Only the two soldierly spirits who trusted their God survived: Caleb and Joshua. Joshua is charged repeatedly — by Moses before all the people, by the Lord himself, and by the people themselves: Act like a man and be strong (Deuteronomy 31:6–8, 23; Joshua 1:1–9, 16–18).

Andrizomai connotes strength of soul. Men act, and act from a soldierly spirit, for those they protect, while trusting their God. All they do is to be governed by love (1 Corinthians 16:14), and that loving spirit doesn’t negate the strong, resilient soul; it focuses it on right ends. “A true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him” (G.K. Chesterton, Illustrated London News, 1911).

(Note: Yes, 1 Corinthians 16:13 is written to the whole church, both men and women. If you want to understand more about the masculine bent of the word translated “act like men” or, also correctly, “be courageous” (NIV), see this article.)

Being a man is being courageous, especially as it relates to obedience to Christ. In modern-day parlance, men need to “man up” when it comes living as Christians.

Young men, who are looking for purpose and meaning, are not encouraged by the Democrats to find it in a relationship with God.

This is where Christians can find common ground with disaffected American males. While believers can (and should) defend the faith courageously, young American males of all stripes can fight for common sense norms and political policies, which often align with Christian virtues and teaching.

  • Men and women are different and are created with distinct immutable attributes. Men cannot be women. Women cannot be men.
  • While societies can adopt evil as a norm (i.e. slavery), future iterations of societies cannot be held accountable for past grievances — especially those that have repented and shed blood to eradicate the evil in the past.
  • Women don’t always tell the truth. In fact, women have become predators themselves (look at the scourge of female teachers who have preyed on young boys).
  • Men can increase their emotional IQ without surrendering their masculine traits.

This is why young men gravitated toward Donald Trump in the past election cycle. Whatever you think of him, you can’t deny that he acted the man when he stood up after being clipped by an assassin’s bullet and shouted “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

On the other hand, the Democrats gave us Tim Walz.

Remember, this is the guy who said, “Harris chose him, in part, because ‘I could code talk to white guys watching football, fixing their truck’ and ‘put them at ease.’ The Minnesota governor described himself as the ‘permission structure’ for white men from rural America to vote for Democrats.”

Yeah, well that didn’t work.

Will Democrats succeed in winning back young American males? They won’t.

One might think that $20 million would buy something more insightful than this, but then, this is the same party that triumphantly chose Tim Walz as its vice-presidential nominee, fully expecting him to be the answer to their gender gap problem. Or in other words, don’t hold your breath.

In reality, the odds that the contemporary Democratic party will be able to win back men, now or in the foreseeable future, are vanishingly small. The party, as it is currently constituted, lacks both the will and the ability to make the changes that would be necessary to do so. What I mean by this is that the contemporary Democratic party is built on a handful of foundational notions that are, by and large, incompatible with the goal of appealing to men.

  1. In my opinion the Democrats or the Marxists/Communists strategy is to tear down our society (tear us down then Build Back Better) by weakening the men. They are weakening our strength as a nation by emasculating and feminizing men (trans), shaming and confusing them. Men are warriors and fight wars but not if they are weak.
