Daily Broadside | Bye Bye Birdie and Bye Bye Affordable Housing in One Local Village

Twitter just became “X.” Here’s a screen grab of the two logos side-by-side on my browser at the same time. Don’t ask me how that happened.

Twitter, Elon Musk’s social media platform, is about to undergo a major rebranding. Musk has announced that the platform’s name will soon change to “X,” and all bird symbols, a long-standing logo for the platform, will be phased out.

The Verge reports that Musk took to Twitter to announce the upcoming changes, stating, “Soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” The tech mogul has been steering Twitter through a series of changes since acquiring the platform last year for a massive $44 billion — even though about half his purchase price has already been wiped out.

In a series of tweets, Musk also hinted at a potential change in the platform’s default color. “Paint It Black,” he posted, followed by a user poll asking whether the platform’s default color should be changed to black. He further added, “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make go live worldwide tomorrow.”

It’s basically Extreme Makeover: Social Media Edition.

Personally, I think this is a good move. It breaks past associations conservatives and liberals make with “Twitter.” Conservatives and moderates remember the censorship aimed primarily at them. Liberals remember it as their power center and now resent that some weird billionaire has taken it away from them.

I hope Musk follows through on his promise to make it a more open platform free from government and blue-haired censors.

Ace of Spades HQ (a daily read) writes about a report showing that wealthy LIBERALS use zoning laws to keep poor minorities out of their neighborhoods.

A new think tank report shows how liberal New York suburbs use restrictive zoning laws to drive up housing prices and prevent poor minorities from moving into their neighborhoods.
The Century Foundation released a study about zoning laws and educational opportunities in Scarsdale and Port Chester, liberal suburban areas in Westchester County, New York, located north of New York City. The study compares zoning laws, demographics and public school performance in the neighboring towns as a case study for how liberal suburbs prevent low-income people and racial minorities from moving in.

“Today, among the most important government policies and practices driving segregation include (1) decisions about where to place public housing; and (2) flagrant income discrimination through exclusionary zoning (which disproportionately hurts people of color),” the study reads.

Scarsdale has a median household income of $250,000 and its population is 71.2% white, with 90.7% of adults having attained a bachelor’s degree or more of education, according to data from New York University’s (NYU) Furman Center. Port Chester has an $88,093 median income and its population is 64.2% Hispanic, with 31.1% of adults attaining at least a bachelor’s degree.

I call your attention to this because I saw something very similar in person last week. I attended a Planning & Zoning Commission meeting at a local village hall (I’ll keep it anonymous to avoid embarrassing them). The agenda included a discussion with a public hearing on annexing a 2.6 acre property to provide affordable rental apartments for people with limited means.

Renters would have to prove credit-worthy, undergo a background check, and the government would subsidize their rental to make it affordable. The plan would require the property to be rezoned from single home residential properties to a multi-family residence (specfically a two-story apartment building).

The property in question sits adjacent to a neighborhood that is unincorporated and therefore not part of the village. However, the residents of that neighborhood were out in force to oppose the planned development and rezoning. They weren’t the only ones who spoke; there were a few who spoke in support of the affordable housing. But those who supported the development were in the minority.

The town is not a liberal stronghold, but skews Democrat. Although 48% are Protestant or Catholic, 46% claim no religion. 81.2% of residents have earned a Bachelor’s degree or higher.

As of 2021, the village has 20,000 residents, 87 percent of whom are white, 1% who are black, 9% who are Asian, and 4% who are Hispanic or Latino. 3.8% of residents live in poverty.

The median income is $118,000, the average cost of a single-family home is $401,000, and the tax rate is 9.5%. 81% of residents own their home, while the other 19% rent. The cost of living is in the “Highest” range as compared across the United States as a whole.

In other words, it’s a wealthy town.

With that as background, I was stunned at what I heard as person after person got up to oppose the planned development. Almost to a person they started off their comments with something like, “No one here opposes helping the underresourced, but …”

After issuing this disclaimer, one homeowner got up and literally said, “I live next door to the property. I’ve lived there for 30-some years” and then he described how he had succeeded through his own hard work to live there. He then proceeded to say, “You’ve heard of NIMBY — well I’m that guy.”

“NIMBY” means Not In My Back Yard. I’m all for helping the poor, but do it somewhere else.

Another woman, a German immigrant who still has her accent, got up to oppose the project. She literally said, “Will you do background checks on anyone who visits the residents?” This was such an affront that a person in the audience gasped, “O-M-G” and was admonished by the deputy chair to keep it quiet.

I was told that at the June meeting, one resident said that they wanted people like themselves to move in, not the icky poor people.

My church fellowship supports this endeavor, but several residents of the neighboring community made it a point that “God” has nothing to do with rezoning the property. In fact, many sent in what seems to be a form letter, one of which reads, in part:

Keep God out of it. Well, what do you expect from a community where nearly half of the residents don’t practice any sort of religion?

What’s amazing is that a mostly white, wealthy community that leans Democrat is doing everything they can to keep the poor out of their neighborhood, and thus reflect the opening paragraph of The Century Foundation’s report:

New York State, like many other states, has a housing affordability crisis, which also exacerbates large inequalities between local public education systems. Government zoning laws that constrain the supply of housing and exclude people of modest means from living in high-opportunity communities are a major cause of both problems. While most of the debates in New York over housing policy have centered around the first problem—the ways in which restrictive zoning drives up housing prices—this report focuses on an equally important and often overlooked challenge, the impact of zoning on the educational opportunities of children.

Liberals talk a good game but are hypocrites when it comes to practicing what they preach. They’re ready to label you a racist if you oppose throwing our borders open to hundreds of thousands of the world’s poor, but once those peasants wind up in their town, they scream “Not in my backyard!”

Daily Broadside | New Term Tries to Make “Normal” Just Another Brick in the Wall

Not sure if you’ve heard, but there’s a new term being bandied about that applies to me and my sexuality. Straight men are now “gynosexuals” and we’re just another stripe on the Pride flag.

Are You Gynosexual? Here’s What It Means, According to Experts

It isn’t easy being a straight male these days unless maybe you enjoy all the privilege that Hunter Biden does. Everybody else gets their own special color on that increasingly garish flag, gets to bobble their man-boobs on the White House lawn, and has the entire month of June dedicated to whatever naughty thing they’re doing with their private parts — slice it, dice it, even make Julienne fries!

But as a straight white male, I don’t get any of that stuff. I have to make do somehow with my gorgeous wife of 21 years, my two handsome sons, and the rewarding career that I’ve pursued for more than two decades. It’s a daily struggle.

As of today, though, I don’t have to settle for less. Thanks to the experts, I now understand that I’m a total freak with my own special made-up word and everything.

Bite me, normies, because my color just went up on the Pride flag. That’s right: I’m a gynosexual, unlike the rest of you squares.

Stephen Green’s tongue-in-cheek take on the latest development in the dynamic world of ever-evolving sexual freakisms is humorous, but there is something vaguely threatening about it.

Gynosexual, according to sex educator Lilith Fox “refers to being sexually attracted to femininity, irrespective of one’s own gender identity or the gender identity of the femme-presenting person they are attracted to.” In plain English, it means that whether you’re a man or a woman, you are a gynosexual if you’re attracted to femininity in either a male or a female.

It means that you can be a boy and like girls, or you can be a girl and like girls. You can also be a boy and like a girly-boy, or be a girl and like a girly-boy. Up until a minute ago, we’ve known boys who like girls as normal and girls who like girls as “lesbian,” and boys who like boys as “gay” and girls who like boys as normal.

But once the LGBTQWERTY+ mafia began defining every conceivable combination of sexual deviancy, they had to invent labels for the normies.

That’s what I find vaguely threatening. Don’t label me. Don’t add me to your endless list of sex-addled possibilities. Don’t try to force me into some little quadrant of your sexual matrix. Doing that destroys the historic “binary” norm of “men” and “women.”

Which is the point.

One guy has put up a fight on Twitter over being labeled “cis” by the trans-community.

He was, of course, taken to the woodshed by the TransElites, who told him that he had no choice. He was “cis” and that was that, you “cissy.”

That’s when Elon Musk jumped in.

This is a front in the war on cultural norms. Language is powerful; if the trans-activists can change the language, the terms of the debate, they win the culture. And so far they’ve been very successful.

Resist. Refuse to accept the label.

Daily Broadside | Being Led to the Slaughter Like a Herd of Cattle

I don’t know if it was my irrefutable logic, my stature as an unknown public servant, or my shameless good looks, but my access to Twitter was restored some time over the weekend. No notice, no explanation, no apology. I just clicked over to read something and ᗒ poof! ᗕ there I was, embraced once again in the land of 280 characters.

I had no confidence in being reinstated. Now that I am, I wonder why. My guess: the algorithm that swept Twitter for offending rule breakers took down every tweet it found, and then the Twitter Censorship Bureau went into clean-up mode, taking complaints about locked accounts one at a time. Or, maybe I just lucked out and got a more conservative reviewer.

Whatever the case, I now wonder if I’m on a “watch” list. I’ve been identified as a potential troublemaker, so maybe next time my good looks won’t be enough. In the meantime, it will be easier to write about the lunacy in our country if I can link to and quote Twitter posts.

So the big news this week is Trump’s indictment in Manhattan.

Former President Donald Trump’s unprecedented indictment has surged into the limelight and fueled public debate over whether this case is legitimate and shows no one is above the law or amounts to a political hack job meant to thwart Trump’s chances in the 2024 presidential election.

Expectations are that Trump will be arraigned at some point in the coming week, with a spokesperson for the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg saying in a statement that it’s now coordinating with Trump’s attorneys the former president’s surrender.

The Left’s maniacal obsession with Trump strikes me as Ahab obsessing over Moby Dick for crippling him. Trump interfered with the Left’s destruction of the United States, an unforgiveable sin and, even though they managed to keep him out of office in 2020, he’s still a threat to them and their agenda. The case that Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is trying to make is weak on the merits.

Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr has criticized the indictment, calling it a “disgrace” and a “political hit job.”

In an interview at the National Review Institute Ideas Summit, Barr said he saw the case against Trump as prosecutorial abuse and as “pathetically weak.”

“Judging from the news reports … it’s the archetypal abuse of the prosecutorial function to engage in a political hit job, and it’s a disgrace,” Barr said when asked to comment on the case.

Barr said that Bragg appears to have ginned up a technical misdemeanor into a felony, adding that this was something that federal prosecutors chose not to prosecute as a campaign violation.

This is lawfare in the service of a political agenda. Not only does “the statute of limitations bar the alleged charges” but “the case is based on a faulty legal theory.”

Trump asks a good question: “How much more are American patriots expected to take?” This is what I alluded to in my post on Friday.

What is happening is that the goons who run the Left are pushing the Right toward desperation. Desperate people will take desperate measures. Let’s hope we have time to turn things around before we get to that point.

I’m not one to advocate for violence or rebellion, but we are now being forced into the cattle race by lawlessness, lies, double standards and persecution, all enabled by the money our government takes from us in the form of “taxes” and uses to turn the instruments of political power against us. The goal is to take total control over us by eliminating as much of our freedom and independence as possible, promising us that if we only trust them, we will be safe and cared for by the government.

There is coming a moment when American patriots will have to make a decision. Will we passively go to the slaughter that’s coming, or will we object? It will have to happen before the head gate closes on our necks. It will be of last resort, when all other options fail.

Daily Broadside | Trump Indictment, Tennessee Insurrection, Twitter Censorship and Double Standards

Right off the bat is the news that for the first time in U.S. history, a former president is facing criminal charges. Donald J. Trump has been indicted by a grand jury on charges related to hush-money paid to Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign.

A Manhattan grand jury indicted Donald J. Trump on Thursday for his role in paying hush money to a porn star, according to people with knowledge of the matter, a historic development that will shake up the 2024 presidential race and forever mark him as the nation’s first former president to face criminal charges.

On Thursday evening, after news of the charges had been widely reported, the district attorney’s office confirmed that Mr. Trump had been indicted and that prosecutors had contacted Mr. Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to authorities in Manhattan.

The Democrats, the MSM, the RINOs and the NeverTrumpers (a quartet of repetition, I say) have been persecuting Trump for years, ever since he rode down the elevator in 2015 and announced that he was running for president, and especially during his time in office. There has never been so much hatred and animosity standing opposed to such great love and loyalty to a president as there has been with Trump. The persecution of Trump has been one of the most degrading and embarrassing eras in our history.

I’m not going to defend Trump’s behavior, especially since it seems like the “hush money” was paid and nobody disputes it. What is disputed is whether he actually had an affair with Daniels, and whether the money was an inappropriate use of campaign funds or is considered a contribution to his campaign that was improperly accounted for. What gets me is the absolute double-standard the Democrats and their allies have. They have used our institutions to prosecute a relentless war on Trump, searching for a crime with which they can take him out of the presidential race.

This brazen misuse of our laws and the disregard for our history and norms is pushing us closer to the unmentionable. Did you all see the “insurrectiony” takeover of the Tennessee Capitol yesterday? Did you see the police trying to prevent protesters from entering, but failing, and the protestors disrupting the People’s Business?

(It’s here that I’d link to a Twitter video, but I apparently hate women who shoot 9-year-olds and the Twitter Nazis have locked up my account.)

Do you think Merrick Garland and the DOJ and FBI will be rounding up protestors and holding them indefinitely in solitary confinement? Or nah? Did I mention the double-standards that the Democrats and their allies have?

Also, speaking of my locked Twitter account, I learned that it wasn’t just me. Apparently, many conservative opinion leaders found themselves locked out of their accounts. Here’s what Sean Davis, CEO and the co-founder of The Federalist, wrote:

I had high hopes for Twitter under Elon Musk’s watch. After all, how could the tech giant get any worse after banning the New York Post, which was founded by Alexander Hamilton himself, for the crime of reporting on possible corruption of the family of a leading presidential candidate in the middle of a close election?

We now have an answer: by banning conservative Christians for reporting on the horrific mass shooting perpetrated by an apparent “trans” person who hated conservative Christians so much she stormed a Christian school in Nashville, opened fire, and murdered three 9-year-old children and three adult staff.

[…]

Well, it happened on Monday at a quiet Christian school atop a hill in the middle of Nashville. And by Wednesday afternoon I was banned by Twitter from accessing my account for reporting on the shooting, for reporting on the Trans Day of Vengeance which may well have inspired the cold-blooded murderer, and for sharing a link to a news story from The Daily Wire, another conservative news outlet based in Nashville.

Twitter claimed my reporting violated Twitter’s terms of service and that I had personally threatened, incited, glorified, or expressed a desire for violence. Such a claim isn’t just false; it’s defamatory. Twitter published a notice on my feed (which I can no longer even access) stating I violated its rules. Again, such a claim is false and defamatory. Twitter has a right to ban me for whatever reason it wants, but it doesn’t have a right to viciously lie about me.

Here’s his diagnosis of what Twitter is doing:

What the people behind this censorship are truly worried about is the prospect of the American people understanding the true evil underlying transgender ideology and the danger it poses to the country and its survival. They don’t want you to understand how every major institution of power in this country bends its knee to the radical trans movement, tells its adherents they are victims, and tells them that anyone who utters the verboten truth that boys cannot become girls and girls cannot become boys wishes to commit genocide against the so-called trans community.

What do you think is the logical conclusion of telling delusional, mentally ill people being surgically mutilated and pumped full of hormones that Christians and conservatives want to commit “genocide” against them? That’s the question you’re not allowed to ask because they know how you’ll answer it because you watched with your own eyes what happened in Nashville on Monday.

Finally,

When a rage-filled and mentally ill “trans” person shoots up a school, the media blame Republicans, or the NRA, or gun makers, or anyone other than the shooter and her warped ideology. They turn the victims into villains, and they turn the murderer into a martyr.

Twitter responded no differently. It didn’t ban us and lock us out of our accounts for lying, but for telling the truth. Why? Because the facts of Monday’s mass murder are fatal to the left-wing narrative, and the only thing the left wing and its myriad institutions in government, business, and media care about is the narrative. The narrative must be protected at all costs, even if it means lying about the facts and those of us who report them.

He’s right, you know. We are now, without question, living in a country that censors free speech. It doesn’t matter if Twitter or YouTube or Google are private companies. They are being allowed to censor political, ideological and moral thought on their platforms under the guise of “safety.”

We’re living out Benjamin Franklin’s famous quotation: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

What is happening is that the goons who run the Left are pushing the Right toward desperation. Desperate people will take desperate measures. Let’s hope we have time to turn things around before we get to that point.

If the Democrats didn’t have double-standards, they’d have no standards at all.

Have a good weekend.

Daily Broadside | My New Badge of Honor

When I clicked over to Twitter yesterday, I was greeted by a message that told me my account had been locked for “violating a Twitter Rule” or something to that effect. I don’t have the exact wording, but it was clear I couldn’t access my account. At first I thought I was looking at some kind of meme — I totally did not expect to be locked out of my account.

When I clicked past that grim notification, here’s what I saw:

It’s my post from this past Tuesday. When I post a Daily Broadside at daveolsson.com, my account automatically posts a notice on Facebook and on Twitter. For the last three years I’ve been posting almost five days a week and have never run afoul of the twitterati censors.

But now I have.

If you look at the post, which consists of a title, a normal person would ask themselves what the problem is. But we don’t live in normal times, so we have to guess what the problem is, because the morally superior twits at the Twitter Censorship Bureau don’t tell you exactly what “rule” you violated.

Having been notified that I violated the “Twitter Rules,” with nothing more to go on, it seemed like a good time to get acquainted with them.

If you want to see “the rules,” you can do so here. There are four sections: Safety, Privacy, Authenticity, and “Third-party advertising in video content.” While looking through them, I came across this gem under “Authenticity”:

When they say that you can’t share anything that might “manipulate or interfere in elections” or “suppress participation” what they really mean is anything that might harm getting Democrats elected, like a true story about Hunter Biden’s laptop. But stories like Trump being a RUSSIAN AGENT are perfectly fine.

How authentically hypocritical.

Back to my experience. From what I can tell I’m not violating any of the Privacy, Authenticity or Third-party advertising “rules,” which means I must have violated a “Safety” rule. Here they are:

If I eliminate the ones I obviously didn’t transgress, it must be I violated the rules concerning “Violent Speech,” “Abuse/Harassment” or “Hateful conduct.” I mean, I guess I could’ve violated the “Violent and Hateful Entities” rules since, perhaps, it could be construed that I “promoted” the activities of a violent and hateful woman. But I’m guessing that’s not what my ban is about.

No, I’m guessing that it has to do with “Hateful conduct” described as: “You may not attack other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease. Learn more.”

My post is about a self-identified transgender, so that fits, but is my title an “attack”? I suspect that that is how the Twittites see it. If I had to guess, the words “woman” and “gender confusion” are the triggers. The killer was a biological female and went by the name Audrey Hale and Aiden. So, I am guilty of calling her a woman and suggesting that it might be linked to gender confusion.

That, my friends, is considered “Hateful conduct.”

Of course, I’m appealing the ruling.

I don’t expect to be exonerated. It’s not a court of law where you can plead your case. If they refuse to reconsider, then I have a choice: stay locked out of my account, or bend the knee to the “safety” standards set at Elon Musk’s Twitter. (Apparently he still hasn’t gotten rid of the Leftist snowflakes who monitor content.) That would mean surrendering to the woke definitions of “violence” and essentially giving in to their view of the world.

On Monday I shared some of what Jeff Goldstein wrote on his substack. One paragraph is worth repeating:

I will not “respect your pronouns” or “celebrate” your “queerness.” I am hostile to your sexualizing of children. I reject your neologisms, your “triggers,” and your desire to control my speech. I know who and what you are: you are my presumptive master, or else the Useful Idiot who empowers him. But I will grant you and your ideology no power over me.

And then I wrote, “I will hold the line and I will refuse to surrender.” True.

It’s the same principle that was at work in the lives of the early church martyrs. According to the account of Polycarp’s martyrdom:

And there met him the sheriff Herod, and his father Nicetes, who removed him into their carriage, and tried to persuade him, sitting by his side and saying, ‘Now what harm is there in saying “Lord Caesar,” and in offering incense, and so on, and thus saving thyself?’ He at first made no reply, but since they persisted he said, ‘I do not intend to do what you advise.’
Documents of the Christian Church, 2nd Edition, by Henry Bettenson, Oxford, 1963, p. 10.

Rather than compromise his beliefs, Polycarp went to the stake and burned to death.

My situation is not in the same category, but the principle is the same. If I’m denied my appeal I will refuse to bow to their demand. Screw their rules. I will not allow a twisted understanding of truth to be my master. I won’t bow to the censorship of free speech.

I will gladly wear my banishment as a badge of honor.

I’ll let you know how it works out.

Daily Broadside | Musk Buys Twitter and the Left Melts Down

Daily Verse | 1 Chronicles 17:20
“There is no one like you, O Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.”

Tuesday’s Reading: 1 Chronicles 21-24

Happy Tuesday and for once we have a story that offers not only a glimmer of hope for our conservative sensibilities, but also some entertainment bordering on not just amusement, but hilarity.

Twitter shares popped over 5% on Monday after the company’s board unanimously accepted Tesla CEO Elon Musk‘s $44 billion offer to take the social media giant private.

Under the terms of the agreement, Twitter stockholders will receive $54.20 in cash for each share of common stock that they own upon closing of the proposed transaction. The purchase price represents a 38% premium to Twitter’s closing stock price on April 1, the last trading day before Musk disclosed a 9.2% stake in the company.

So Musk buys out stockholders, who get a premium on their shares, and will take the company private.

Musk, a self-described “free-speech absolutist,” has been critical of the platform and its chief executive Parag Agrawal’s approach to free speech.

Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a statement. “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

Shareholders make money and Musk will make money, but the point of his takeover, he says, is that he sees Twitter as the “digital town square” where speech (opinions, fast takes, facts and news) needs the freedom to express itself without condition.

On the surface, that’s a good thing since Twitter is notorious for shutting down anything that goes against a Leftist narrative and for censoring a story (the New York Post’s reporting on the Hunter Biden laptop) that should have had a measurable effect on the outcome of the 2020 election, i.e. 15 percent more votes for Trump.

Setting that aside, the best part is the meltdown happening with the Twitteratti and the Twitter-adjacent.

Those who are horrified that Musk now owns one of the most effective and popular means of mass communication in the world are worried that somehow, freedom of speech means that people on the fringe are going to get hurt.

Like, literally hurt.

Deborah Brown, whom Reuters describes as a “digital rights researcher and advocate” at Human Rights Watch, asserted: “Regardless of who owns Twitter, the company has human rights responsibilities to respect the rights of people around the world who rely on the platform. Changes to its policies, features, and algorithms, big and small, can have disproportionate and sometimes devastating impacts, including offline violence. Freedom of expression is not an absolute right, which is why Twitter needs to invest in efforts to keep its most vulnerable users safe on the platform.”

And who are these “most vulnerable users”?

But Michael Kleinman, director of technology and human rights at Amnesty International USA, sees trouble ahead: “The last thing we need is a Twitter that willfully turns a blind eye to violent and abusive speech against users, particularly those most disproportionately impacted, including women, non-binary persons, and others.”

Ah. The usual suspects.

Listen, I support banning users who use the platform to intimidate, bully, or threaten the welfare or life of other users, online or off. The problem is that the Left defines “intimidate, bully, or threaten” in terms that favor only its viewpoint and that often include speech that is simply anything they don’t like.

As usual, the Right can meme.

Good times.

It remains to be seen how many Lefties leave Twitter because Musk is now boss. I think it’ll be hard for them because they’re like crack addicts and need their daily fix of dunking on the Right in 180-character units.

And if they don’t like it, they can go build their own site.
