Daily Broadside | Liberal San Francisco Appoints First Non-Citizen Official

Insanity.

The San Francisco Elections Commission has, for what is believed to be the first time in history, appointed someone who isn’t a U.S. citizen—who isn’t legally allowed to vote—to serve as an official.

The officer, Kelly Wong, was sworn in on Feb. 14, local news outlet KQED reported. It said that Ms. Wong, an immigrant rights advocate, is a native of Hong Kong who arrived in the United States in 2019 for graduate studies.

She was sworn in by Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin during a ceremony at San Francisco City Hall after winning unanimous support from the board.

There’s so much Wong with this, starting with the fact that she isn’t even a citizen of the United States. Kelly Wing Kwan Wong* is NOT AN AMERICAN — but she’s now a public official overseeing elections in an American city.

How does this even happen?!

The appointment of a noncitizen to city boards, commissions, and advisory bodies was made possible in 2020 when voters passed a proposal by lawmakers to remove the standing requirement that candidates seeking office hold U.S. citizenship.

Oh.

We’re checking her credentials, right? I mean, she’s a Chinese immigrant from Hong Kong who came here in 2019 to pursue a graduate degree. Does anyone know if she’s here LEGALLY? Is this a “woman from China overstays her student visa and is now a government official” situation?

Also, China is a communist nation and owns Hong Kong now. Do we know if she’s a member of the CCP?

We do know that she’s an activist. Her LinkedIn profile says, “I have devoted my career to championing immigrant rights and equity and inclusion.” You can also access her capstone paper called, “Exploring Racial Microaggressions Toward Chinese Immigrant Women in Greater Boston During Covid.”

Perfect. A noncitizen grievance monger activist has now been given power to review elections in one of the most regressive cities in America. Why would a city do this to themselves and to America (because you know this won’t stay localized in San Francisco)?

Because diversity, that’s why.

The significance of Wong’s role extends beyond her personal achievements, signaling a broader shift towards inclusivity within San Francisco’s political landscape. In a city where immigrants constitute a substantial portion of the population, Wong’s representation on the Elections Commission sends a powerful message about the city’s commitment to embracing diversity at every level of governance. Her focus on increasing engagement within immigrant communities is expected to boost voter turnout, thereby enriching the democratic process with a wider array of perspectives and voices.

How much you want to bet that “increasing engagement within immigrant communities” will boost voter turnout for DEMOCRATS? How much do you want to be that the majority of “immigrants” are not here legally? How much do you want to bet that illegal immigrants will be voting this November, if they’re not already in the system?

The appointment of Kelly Wong is a sign that we’re a dying nation. If you don’t respect your own country, putting non-citizen “diversity” hires over actual native Americans, in order to appeal to “immigrants,” why should anyone else respect your country?

  1. Legally it sounds like SF voters decided American citizenship isn’t a requirement so, no, unless there’s a superior county or state or national law forbidding the arrangement, I don’t know that there’s a legal remedy, except to reinstate citizenship as a requirement. This is a perfect example of “democracy” being used against itself, to bring into existence what was once unthinkable.
