Daily Broadside | Watch: Another Civil War?

Daily Verse | Leviticus 27:28
“‘If any member of the community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, when they realize their guilt and the sin they have committed becomes known, they must bring as their offering for the sin they committed a female goat without defect.'”

Friday and the end of the week. I’m still working on knowing when to walk away and when to run.

As the sole proprietor of this blog, I don’t have anyone to fill in for me when I’m thrown off my game. I’ve been fighting a nasty head cold so I’m going to keep it short today and hope it clears up over the weekend.

I mentioned yesterday that I’ve been anticipating a new Civil War in the states over the last few years. One of the scholars I listen to is Allen Guelzo, a visiting scholar at The Heritage Foundation. He’s a leading expert on the Civil War era and historian who serves as Senior Research Scholar in the Council of the Humanities and Director of the Initiative on Politics and Statesmanship in the James Madison Program at Princeton University.

Guelzo recently participated in a panel discussion sponsored by the Heritage Foundation called “Another Civil War? The Struggle Over the Meaning of America.” There’s a brief summation of his comments over at The Stream, but I’ve linked the video below because I think it’s worth watching.

Guelzo is joined by Samuel Gregg, D.Phil., Joseph Loconte, PhD. and Angela Sailor, who facilitates the discussion. If you have an hour, it would be worth your time to listen as they discuss how likely a civil war is in the next few years. You can skip the first six minutes which consist of introductions; Guelzo’s comments start around 6:45.

I won’t spoil it by telling you that Guelzo sees it differently than I do, and I have a great deal of respect for him. The question remains, however: given the great division in our country, what do we do?

Have a great weekend.
